The composition takes inspiration from Baroque-era courtly evenings and the French tradition of cognac. It opens with an impression of aged wood, moves into a heart of cognac paired with orris, and settles on a base of oak and tonka bean, suggesting the warmth of barrel woods and a gentle sweetness."Baroque music has been a fixture in my life since I was very young.  My father, who is deaf in one ear, listened to loud music in the central artery of the house with an absolute disregard for the rest of his family’s ears. Many a morning did I jolt awake to Royal Fireworks or Lully’s Te Deum. When we were kids, my sister & I hated it. But In college, I fell hard for Classical Music. It has been a constant in the background of my entire adult life. I listen to Baroque music almost every day, specifically in the morning for maximum pomp & in the evening for courtly soiree vibrations. Come over any eve & you will certainly hear Carpenter, Lully, & others who frequented Louis the Sun King’s court on my record player. In this music, one hears Versailles billowing out with visions of dances, intrigues, powder wigs, sumptuous gardens, & of course rivers of cognac flowing. Cognac is the spirit that has reigned supreme over all of France since its inception in the 16th century. Cognac Reign captures an evening of Lully sipping the fine French spirit with notes of caramelized bergamot, violetty orris, & tonka beans.
